About Our Church
The Seventh-day Adventist Church grew out of Protestant reformation and revival movements that were prevalent in the early 1800’s. Accepting the premise of such ministers as Methodist William Miller, believers from many denominations were convinced of the imminence of Jesus’ Second Coming and took on the designation “Adventists”. A particular Adventist group met with a Seventh-day Baptist congregation in Washington, NH and eventually established the official SDA church in the 1860’s. From there, the church now has a worldwide membership of over 14 million people in 204 countries. The worldwide church also operates 6,700 schools, 165 hospitals, and 56 publishing houses throughout those countries.
The Billerica congregation originated in the former Stoneham churches. In the spring of 1977, a company of SDA believers sought to establish a church in the Northwest suburbs of Boston. On April 23 of that year, those Adventists officially organized the Burlington SDA Church and held services at the Pine Glenn School on Wilmington Rd. Later that year, the congregation moved to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Burlington. In 1991, after many years of seeking to establish their own house of worship, the congregation purchased its present location at 30 Pond St. in Billerica from the Community of Christ Lutheran Church.
(As an historical interest, the Billerica church building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as originally a barn built in 1760 by a descendant of one of Billerica’s colonial settlers, Jonathan Dutton. The Dutton farm remained in the family heritage through a purchase by Thomas Holden (a relative) in 1801. The Holden farm was intact until it was sold in 1929 to a Billerica attorney, Forest Collier. Between the years 1938-1950, the Collier family subdivided the property for residential development and in 1950 the barn and its parcel were purchased by a subsidiary of the International Order of Odd Fellows and the building was used for a meeting hall. Subsequently, the Shawsheen Building Association (the subsidiary) sold the building to the aforementioned Lutheran group).
We would be happy to have you join us in worship at one of the church events listed on our calendar.
About Seventh-day Adventists
Adventists believe a Trinity of three persons--the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit--make up one God. They made salvation possible when Jesus, the Son, came to earth as a baby in Bethlehem and lived a sinless life in accordance with the Father's will. When Jesus was crucified for the sins of the people of the world and arose from the dead on the third day, victory was won for everyone. More >>
